The BOVESPA, a major stock market index which tracks the performance of large companies based in Brazil. Historically, from 1976 until 2012 the BOVESPA market value averaged 20931.06 points reaching an historical high of 73516.81 points in May of 2008 and a record low of 0.00 points in February of 1976. The Brazilian capital markets and financial systems are regulated and monitored by the National Monetary Council (Conselho Monetário Nacional – “CMN”), the Brazilian Central Bank (Banco Central do Brasil – “Central Bank”) and the Brazilian Securities and Exchanges Commission (Comissão de Valores Mobiliários – “CVM”)
The BM&FBOVESPA (Portuguese pronunciation: [boˈvespa]; in full, Bolsa de Valores, Mercadorias & Futuros de São Paulo) is a stock exchange located at São Paulo, Brazil. As of December 31, 2011 it had a market capitalization of US $1.22 Trillion, making it in the 8th largest stock exchange in the world. On May 8, 2008, the São Paulo Stock Exchange (Bovespa) and the Brazilian Mercantile and Futures Exchange (BM&F) merged, creating BM&FBOVESPA. The benchmark indicator of BM&FBOVESPA is the Índice Bovespa. There were 381 companies traded at Bovespa as of April 30, 2008.
